Asset: USAID/Haiti
Under the
USAID/ASSET program in Haiti, DATEX is currently working
closely with NGOs and community groups as they form partnerships
with local governments to provide essential urban services, especially
sustainable community-based sanitation services and controlled
sustainable environmental projects. Continuing financing for activities
will be through user fees, sale of services and by-product reclamation,
and from local tax revenues. DATEX also collaborates with other
donors for capital investments to replicate successful pilot projects
financed under an ASSET/DATEX managed urban grants program.
The ASSET
Project also involves developing criteria and grantee selection
methods for urban and rural subgrants to local NGOs and community
organizations. Focusing on environment-related activities, the
subgrants will be used to create locally controlled sustainable
environmental projects that will generate local employment and
create public and private partnerships. Many of the grants provide
material support to local communities engaged in small scale efforts
to encourage reforestation and local environment clean-up and
sustainable waste management.
